Lake Fish : :
Located underneath the ice of Ice Crowned Lake, there is a variety of fish that can be caught and eaten by both dragon and human. There are a few venomous fish under the ice, but mostly the fish are edible. There are many species of fish that live below the ice, such as trout and bass, as well as other marine life. These aquatic animals are difficult to get to, but with such a variety and high volume, it is worth the extra time to get to them. This lake can sustain quite a few animals and people for a rather long while, although because the lake is always frozen overhead, most larger animals cannot get to the fish below.
Ermine : :
A type of weasel, these creatures eat mainly other animals or fish that they are able to catch. Their fur can be used for warmth if caught, and their meat, though not a lot of it, can serve for a nice meal once cooked. These animals excel in winter climates, though are usually found in the forest and not out in open fields. The best way to catch these are to have a dragon hunt them, or set traps. They are fast critters that will burrow out of sight if threatened. There is not a lot of ermines in the Ice Crowned Mountains, but plenty enough for some few and far between catches.
White Squrriel : :
Since these are so plentiful in number, they are an excellent source of meat when high up in the mountains. Harder to spot in the trees with their white coat, white squirrels also do not like to climb down when potential predators are nearby. These creatures are difficult to catch because they are so fast and detect danger so easily, but if caught, make a great meal for both dragon and human. They do not have a lot of meat on them, so several need to be caught for a full meal, but in a time of need, these creatures are great prey.
Mountain Bird : :
These beautiful birds live up on snowy peaks quite well, in a very small number. They are hard to come across because of how shy they are. Even with colorful feathers and loud calls, these mountain birds are able to hide from even the best of trackers. Setting traps is the only way to efficiently catch these creatures, as even dragons are unable to come across them during a hunt. These birds nest on the ground, buried under snow or inside hollow logs. These birds come out to the snowy fields to find food often, and can be found there during the hours of dusk and dawn.
Lemings : :
Lemmings are aggressive animals. Even when threatened and being attacked by a predator, they have no problem fighting back. They are not very large, but they sure pack a punch. They can rip through both dragon maws and human flesh, though have trouble getting through tough dragon scales. These critters are everywhere and can be hunted for a small meal. Their meat can even be used as bait for fishing, or bait for some of the other carnivorous animals on the mountain. Lemmings are quick and will borrow if in danger.
Marmot : :
Marmots are just as shy as the Mountain birds of Ice Crowned Mountain. They are hard to come by, but their fatty meat is well worth looking for. They are rich in protein and are able to provide a full meal to those who consume them. Their fur can be used to create warm items. They are not as fast as other animals, but they are hard to spot as they are so low to the ground. Even in the snow, marmots tend to stay buried and look for grass underneath the snow. They can eat berries and other plants, and they do not attack back when threatened. They will flee, if at all possible, and are active mostly during the day.
Wolverine : :
Just like a small bear, wolverines are mean. They will attack. They will hunt dragons. They will do whatever it takes to get a meal. Typically they feed on carrion, so cooking wolverine meat is essential to not getting sick. There are not a ton of wolverine on the mountainside, but those that are able to be found make for thick fur for warmth and quite a lot of meat. Killing these beasts can prove to be a challenge, because of how mean they are, but they can be used for a lot of things. Their bones can be used for utensils, if needed, or for sharp weapons if cut down the right way. Wolverines are solitary creatures and typically can only be found one at a time. They do not like dragons and will happily kill and eat one if given half a chance. They have no problem taking out larger prey.
White Rabbit : :
Rabbits breed like, well, rabbits, so they are in high volume all over the mountain. They are fast and difficult to catch, but who doesn’t like rabbit stew? These animals are great for a quick meal, and dragons are able to catch them fairly easily if they know where to look. These rabbits typically stay under the snow to find grasses and such to eat, but they come out during dusk and dawn hours to the fields and frozen lake to find food. This is the best time to find these rabbits, although finding them in their burrows are also a possibility. It is very difficult to find them under the snow, so out in the open is usually the best place to wait for them to show up to hunt. Snow rabbits are hunted by most other carnivore animals.
Snow Owl : :
Snowy Owls are active only during nighttime hours. They can be found sleeping during the day inside tree trunks, but mostly they can be found at night hunting for their own prey. They have great hearing and are almost silent in flight, so finding and catching them can be tough. But, their feathers can be used for a variety of things, and dragons can eat their meat for good nutrients. Snowy owls are really not the best meal for a human, although they can eat them in dire situations. Snowy owls do not have much meat on them, and their bones are hollow, so pick your prey wisely.
Mountain Goat : :
Mountain goats are probably the best source of meat any traveler could ever hope for. Finding them in such harsh climates, though, is almost impossible. And although there are quite a few herds of goats roaming Ice Crowned Mountain, they are the most difficult prey to find. No one is quite sure where they are located, or how far they move in a single day, but mountain goats do not typically stay in one spot long as they are looking for food. Mountain goats’ horns are able to penetrate most types of skin and keep predators away, although dragons are a formidable foe. If a human and dragon pair can find a mountain goat, it is certain several dragons and humans will have plenty to eat for a short while.
Quail : :
Quail eggs are great protein and easier to catch than the parents. Although they do not lay all the time, quails are often seen in the fields under snow or just inside the brush, under the safety of bushes. These birds are easy to hear, but difficult to see, despite their non-white appearance. These birds eat mostly plants and seeds but will forage for almost anything for survival. Although difficult to find, they are packed with breast meat. These birds are a favorite among a lot of dragons and are highly coveted because they are so hard to find and get to. Selling these birds can bring in a large profit if one can get down the mountain and to a safe village before the cold settles in.
Snakes : :
Although snakes cannot survive the cold and go into hibernation when it is winter, these snakes have been able to adapt ever so slightly to the climate. Because snow never melts, these mountain snakes sleep for weeks at a time in a mini-hibernation and come out again once in a while to eat as much as they can, as quickly as they can. Somehow they have been able to survive like this, and for hunting purposes, can mostly be found sleeping in their burrows. Most of these snakes are venomous, so hunters must be careful when trying to kill and eat these reptiles. Once bitten, since there is no help except down the mountain, death is almost certain. Even dragons are susceptible to these bites, so hunting these snakes can be very risky.
White Fox : :
Found mostly in the forest or hunting in the snow, white foxes are a good source of meat for larger animals. These foxes are medium in volume, and although there are not a ton of them on the mountain, their population is enough to sustain them for a little while. Dragons and humans should have little trouble hunting these quick foxes, although it may be a challenge to find them with their white fur. Their coats can be used for warmth, as most creatures with fur, or their coats can be sold in villages if desired.
